Certainly sharks are capable of killing people, but in general, people simply are not their preferred food! This type of feeding requires gill rakers —long, slender filaments that form a very efficient sieve —analogous to the baleen plates of the great whales. They're even known to swim up into freshwater rivers and lakes. The pilot fish will swim along with the shark, not being eaten and feeding on smaller fish and scraps that the shark leaves behind.
